Container Maintenance: Make Yours Last 30 Years

Containers are nearly indestructible — 'nearly' being the operative word. Twenty minutes a year covers the gap.

A shipping container survived years of salt spray on the open ocean before it reached your paddock. It will outlast every timber shed you've ever owned — if you deny rust its two favourite conditions: trapped moisture and neglected scratches.

Get it off the ground (once)

The single biggest lifespan decision happens on delivery day: corners up on sleepers, blocks or pavers, with air moving underneath. A container sitting in damp grass rusts from its underside cross-members — the part you never see until the floor goes soft.

The annual twenty minutes

Walk the roof line (from a ladder). Look for ponding water, leaf mats and dents that hold puddles. Standing water is the roof's slow killer; sweep debris and let dents drain.

Touch up scratches before they brown. Any scrape through the paint gets a wire-brush and a dab of metal primer plus exterior enamel. Sixty seconds per scratch now beats a welded patch later.

Grease the door gear. Hinges and lock-rod cams get a shot of grease or lanolin spray; door gaskets get a wipe and a check for cracks. Doors are the only moving parts a container owns — keep them sweet and the whole box stays sealed.

Check the seals with the daylight test. Climb in, shut the doors, wait for your eyes to adjust. Any daylight means a gasket or a hole needs attention.

Surface rust versus real rust

Brown freckles and faded panels are cosmetic — every used container wears them, and they can sit unchanged for a decade. Rust that matters is flaky, layered and lives at the roof edges, door frames and underside. Cosmetic rust: ignore or paint. Structural rust: treat now, because steel only ever gets thinner.
